Coupons can be used by both you and your sellers to offer discounts to customers across the site.
Admin portal-generated coupons apply across the site on products from any seller, funded by the marketplace. Seller-created coupons are restricted to their products, funded by the seller rather than the marketplace.
All created coupons can be found in Marketing > Coupons > All coupons. Select a filter and click the Show button to show search results.
Creating a coupon (Admin portal)
- Sign in to the operator portal.
- Go to Marketing > Coupons > Create new coupon.
- Fill out the coupon attributes.
- Select Create Coupon.
Coupon Attributes
Code
This is the coupon code that is sent out to customers to use on the website. It can be entered in and applied on the view cart and checkout pages. Each code can only be used once. For instance, you cannot have two coupons with the same code. If you did not enter a code, then the system creates a random 8-digit code such as OHJAWFR1.
Description
This is a full description of what the coupon offers. It is displayed only on the coupons listing page which allows the admin users or sellers to view what discount the coupon code provides.
Discount type/Discount amount
In these fields, you can set up whether the coupon offers a dollar amount off, a percentage off, or free shipping. If you select Percentage as the Discount Type, then the Discount Amount column is set to a percentage by default. If you select Dollar Amount, then the Discount Amount is in dollars. When you select free shipping, a toggle is displayed allowing the users to restrict the use of the coupon to domestic orders only.
Minimum order amount/Maximum order amount (optional)
When a value is specified in the Minimum Order Amount field, the customer must spend a certain amount before the coupon code can be applied. You can add a Maximum Order Amount as well, which is recommended to use with percentage-off coupons.
Total budget
Specify a value in this field if you have a specific amount that is allocated to coupons. This amount must represent the total amount you are willing to spend. Once the total budget has been reached, the coupon code is no longer valid to use.
Total uses
This field represents the total number of times the coupon can be used by anyone. If you're offering a single-use coupon, then total uses must be set to 1. If you are running a competition and there are 20 coupons for $10 off an order available, then you can make the total use of the coupon 20. Once the coupon code has reached its total usage, the coupon code is no longer valid for use.
Expiry date
You can set an expiry date for the coupon. Once the expiry date has passed, the coupon can no longer be used. An expiry date occurs at 11:59:59 pm of the date you have selected. For example, if you select 29/12/21 as the expiry date, then it ends as soon as 30/12/2021 begins at 00:00am.
Restrict to categories
This section allows you to restrict the use of the coupon to specific categories only. For example, $100 off any road bike. You can restrict the coupon so that it can only be used on the purchase of a road bike. You can also select multiple categories. When you select the appropriate category, click Add to apply the restriction to the coupon.
Restrict to brands
Similar to the Restrict to categories field, the Restrict to brands field allows you to restrict the use of the coupon to specific brands. You can select multiple brands, and select brands alongside categories so that the coupon code can only be used with specific products from specific brands.
Free Shipping Coupons
The Coupon feature enables sellers to create free shipping coupons with the same functionality as other coupons. This can be restricted to specific brands and categories, set with minimum or maximum order amounts, and include expiry mechanisms. Free shipping coupon codes from the seller's account apply exclusively to their items, with the seller covering the discount.
Create a free shipping coupon
- Sign in to the operator portal.
- Go to Marketing > Coupons > Create new coupon.
- Select Free Shipping from the Discount type dropdown.
- Select where you want the free shipping coupon to apply to:
- Domestic only
- Domestic and international
Note: Domestic is not selected by default. This means that any new free shipping coupons created will be valid for free international shipping as well.
- Fill out the rest of the coupon attributes.
- Click Create Coupon.
Seller Coupons
Sellers can generate coupons within their account with an interface and functionality similar to the admin portal. These codes apply solely to items from that seller and will not work if no such items are in the customer's cart. With seller coupons, the seller funds the discount.
Distinguish between seller and marketplace coupons in Orders by navigating to All Sales and checking the Coupon Used? checkbox. The Coupon Used column displays the code with "marketplace" for marketplace-funded coupons and "seller" for seller-funded ones. Separate columns specify discounts funded by the marketplace from those that are funded by the seller.
In the instance that a customer tries to use a coupon, which does not meet the coupon's restrictions (Example: minimum spend, must be X brand, or must be from X seller), then they will see an error message similar to this:
Coupons can also be imported in bulk. Please refer to this article for more details.
