Searching is one of the most important areas of the website. The easier it is for your customers to navigate to what they're looking for, the better conversion you will have. In this article, we will explain the different ways of configuring your search through the Admin Configuration Settings.
This article covers the following topics.
Header Search
Let's start with your Homepage Search. In Admin > Configuration > Customisation Settings, you will find a heading named "Header Settings". From here, you will be able to change your header search from the setting "
Keyword:
Keyword, Location, and Radius:
Location & Radius:
Homepage Search (Hero Search): (optional)
On the homepage banner, you can insert a "Hero Search" content block in the page-builder which follows the same functionality as above. The Hero Search, and the Header Search can both share the same functionality, or, be different depending on how you'd like this setup on each setting.
The Hero Search is an optional content block that you do not necessarily need to use. To insert or edit your Hero Search, navigate to Admin > Content > Home Page. If you haven't added the Hero Search content block already, feel free to add this in by selecting the Block Type > Hero Search > Add. As shown in the image below, the Search Configuration has the same four options as the Header Search.
Category Page (/s page):
The Category Page, or /s page as we call it, is the page listing all of your seller's products in one place. This is where most functionality is built in admin through the categories, however, there are also some configuration settings that you are able to change which we will explain below.
Let's start with the Configuration Settings. In Admin navigate to Configuration > Customisation Settings > Search Settings.
This setting is to choose how your products are displayed on the /s page. You can choose between the default Grid layout or List layout.
List View:
Grid View:
Default Search Radius: Sets initial search radius for all location search refinement components across site.
Homepage Radius:
Category (/s) Page Radius: This can be found as a filter on the left hand side of the /s page.
Hide Brand Search and Brand info in Products: This configuration hides the 'Brands' filter from the refine search box on the left-hand side of the /s page (shown in the image comparison below). This also hides all brand information on the products page (/a). Please note that you also have the option to hide brands at a category level by editing the category (more about categories).
Hide Duration Search: When enabled, this configuration hides the 'Duration' section from the refine search bar (applicable to events only).
Hide Condition Search: When enabled, this configuration hides the 'Condition' option from the refine search box. Please note that you also have the option to hide conditions at a category level (more about categories).
Hide Availability Search: When enabled, this configuration hides the 'Availability' option from the refine search box.
Hide Seller Search: When enabled, this configuration hides the 'Seller' option from the refine search box and product pages.
Hide Gender: When enabled, this configuration hides the 'Gender' option from the refine search box.
Show Location: This allows a user to specify a location & distance in the sidebar refine search box on the /s page. This setting is able to be turned off only on the old /s pages.
Show Model Search: When enabled, this configuration allows a user to search for a product model from the product database (if you are utilizing the product database) in the sidebar refine search box on the /s page. The image below is an example of how BikeExchange use this.
Always show the date filter: When enabled, this configuration displays the 'Date' filter in the refine search box for all searches, despite only being applicable to event products.
Default Sort Order:
The 'Default Sort Order' configuration dictates how products are first displayed when a user conducts a search on the website. This order has a hierarchy model, and should reflect what you believe to be most important to you or your users. i.e. do you want your users to be able to easily access Buy Online items, Sale Items, Cheapest items or most recent? This default sort order can be overridden at a category level if some product aspects are more important to users for a particular category than the default configuration.
- As 'Featured' products are paid for (unless featured by an admin user), these will always appear first on any product search (unless a 'Sort by' filter has been applied).
- If all displayed products have the same relevance (e.g. during a category search), then they will be sorted randomly.
- The order of the products is dictated by the default sort order configuration, e.g. if 'Featured → Sale Percentage → Relevance' is selected, then featured products will be listed first, followed by products with the highest percentage off, followed by all other products sorted by relevance to the search.
- For Featured > Tier > Relevance please see Sorting Search Results By Seller Tier
Alternative Sort Order Options This configuration dictates which alternative options are available to users to sort their search results by i.e. when a user first conducts a search, the products will be sorted using the configuration in the 'default sort order'. However, users can then select 'Sort By' other options. The 'alternative' sort order options available to the user correspond to which options are selected within Site Configuration.
- 'Nearest' will only appear as a 'Sort by' option if the User has searched by location.
- If 'Upcoming Events' is ticked, this will appear as a 'Sort by' option, even if there are no event products in the search results.
- In the instance that no alternative sort order options are selected, the 'Sort by' box will disappear from the search results on the website.
Note: Please make sure you submit the configuration for the changes you've made to apply.
