The taxonomy determines how listings of products are viewed by your sellers and how buyers discover those listings or products. It can also have a big impact on how your site is indexed by search engines.
Breadth and depth of taxonomy
A well-structured taxonomy prevents a small number of top-level categories and avoids categories being too deep. We recommend keeping a broad taxonomy with a maximum of 5 to 8 subcategories per level.

Add a new category
To create a new category, complete the category form and save your changes.
- Sign in to the Operator portal.
- Go to CATEGORISATION > Categories.
- Enter the category name and, if needed, add alternative search terms.
- Fill in additional details, such as title, parent category, secondary categories, prototype, and any optional purchase limits or tax codes.
- Configure extra options (condition, brand handling, sales tax, gender, etc.) and upload a mobile app image if required.
- Add shipping parcel details such as weight and dimensions.
- Click Create Category to save.

The list below explains each field and setting in the New Category page. Use it as a guide when entering details to make sure your category is set up correctly.
- Name: Short label for the category (e.g., Clothing, Tables). Appears in search and breadcrumbs.
- Alternative search terms (optional): Up to 5 keywords that help this category appear in search results.
- Title: A longer, descriptive version of the category name (e.g., Kids Bikes instead of Kids). Should be unique and self-explanatory.
- Parent: Select an existing parent category if this is a subcategory.
- Prototype: Select a prototype to apply a predefined structure of fields and attributes.
- Min purchase quantity (optional): Minimum number of items a buyer must purchase in one order.
- Max purchase quantity (optional): Maximum number of items a buyer can purchase in one order.
- Product tax code (optional): Code used for tax reporting and compliance.

Settings:
- Override sales tax: Applies custom tax rules to this category.
- Has condition (e.g., new, used): Lets sellers mark condition for adverts in this category. If unchecked, all adverts reset to the marketplace default.
- Has brands: Allows sellers to assign brands. If unchecked, brand values are deleted from adverts in this category.
