Listing products under different brands helps your users search for products faster. Consider a hardware site where we want to list power tools made by different manufacturers. By adding the brands to the database, the sellers can categorize their adverts by manufacturer name. We can also have a brand page on the front end of the website which provides additional information about that brand.
Creating a brand (Admin Only Task)
There are two ways to import brands into the Marketplacer admin which are the operator portal user interface or the bulk upload tool. To create a brand you must first go to CATEGORISATION > Brands in the operator portal where you will be presented with the option to create a brand.
Note: You cannot delete a brand, but you can merge it into another brand.
Bulk Upload
By using the bulk upload tool, it saves you time creating brands individually especially when you have to import hundreds or thousands of brands. To use this method, go to the CATEGORISATION > Brands and click Bulk Upload.
The URL path should end with:
/administration/brand_imports
Create your CSV or XLSX spreadsheet with the fields Name and Show In Advert Title?. The value in the Name is the name of the brand in the way you want it to appear in your adverts. The show in the Advert title column can only contain "y" or "n" which determines if the brand name is displayed in front of all of that brand's advert titles. Please also input the brand slug that you wish to have. No capital letters or special characters can be included in this slug, save for "-".
Once this file is created and you're satisfied with this file, save this on your device. Once this is saved, click Choose File, select the CSV file, and click Upload.
To check on the progress or status of this import, click the here hyperlink in the Check the results section.
To check that your brands have been uploaded correctly click the link in "3. Check the results". You will be taken to a page that lists all brand uploads you have done. Check the "Failed Count" to see if any brands didn't upload properly. If there are any that have failed a number will be hyperlinked, select the number in this list to diagnose the issue, in this case, none have failed (0).
Operator portal user interface
Using the Admin UI to upload more brands to your marketplace is useful when your sellers ask you to add a new brand on their behalf. This is the ideal method if the number of brands you must add is minimal.
To add a brand through the operator portal UI, go to CATEGORISATION > Brands and click the New brand.
The URL path should end with:
/administration/brand_imports
When you land on the Brands page, enter the required details for your brand. The required fields you must populate are Name and Show in Advert Title.
The Show in Advert Title option controls whether the brand name is added to the start of the advert title. For instance, if you add a brand called "Black & Decker", and your seller lists an advert with the title "18V Lithium-Ion Cordless Drill Driver Kit", then the website shows this as "Black & Decker 18V Lithium-Ion Cordless Drill Driver Kit" because you selected the Show in Advert Title checkbox selected for this brand. If you disable this option for this brand, then the advert title will revert to "18V Lithium-Ion Cordless Drill Driver Kit".
You can also decide to define your Brand Slug in the optional Brand slug field. If not this is provided, the brand slug will be autogenerated using the name as a reference.
For instance, if your brand name is Louis Vuitton, it autogenerates the slug louis-vuitton.
The Alternative search terms field allows you to enter up to 5 alternative search terms, to know more about this, click through to the article here.
If you upload a brand image, this is referenced in the metadata for the brand page on the website. This metadata setting is the basis of sites such as Facebook of which image to use as a thumbnail if someone shares that page. This image can also be used on the seller's advert pages, and shop page on the marketplace (shown in the image below).
You canopt to prohibit the option to list this brand's products for sale online or as click and collect items. This is useful if the manufacturer has specific restrictions on how their products are distributed.
