If your marketplace supports wholesale selling, Marketplacer allows you to offer products at wholesale prices, separate from your retail catalog. This article provides an overview of how wholesale works, what changes in your account when it’s enabled, and what actions are required from you to start using it effectively.
If you sell both wholesale and retail, you can manage both from a single seller portal. Wholesale and commission orders and products are clearly distinguished throughout.
If you’re unsure whether wholesale is active for your account or need help configuring your products, contact your marketplace operator.
What changes when wholesale is enabled
If your operator has enabled wholesale for your account, you may see changes across the product editor, financial documents, and reports. Here’s what to expect:
- A new wholesale item price (ex. tax) field will appear on product variants
- You can mark individual product variants as wholesale
- When correctly set up, your invoices and remittance documents will reflect wholesale pricing
- Exported reports may include new wholesale-related fields
- Mixed wholesale and retail orders are not allowed from your store
- Wholesale orders are marked with a WHOLESALE badge in your order list, so you can tell them apart from standard orders at a glance
- If your store syncs with Shopify through MConnect, orders sent to Shopify carry your wholesale price, not the consumer-paid price for wholesale products
- Once your operator approves a wholesale-tagged product, you can no longer edit its wholesale price yourself
Note: Wholesale prices don't sync from Shopify into Marketplacer. Product syncs from Shopify won't overwrite your vetted wholesale price, but you still need to enter and update the wholesale price directly in Marketplacer.
How to offer wholesale products
To properly set up wholesale pricing:
- Make sure your operator has enabled wholesale for your account. Learn more.
- For each product you want to offer at wholesale rates:
- Enter a value in the Wholesale Item Price (Ex Tax) field.
-
Check the Variant is wholesale box to mark the item as wholesale.
Note: Marking a variant as wholesale sets its remittance value to the wholesale price instead of using commission. A positive wholesale price is required.
- Only products marked this way will trigger wholesale invoices and tax calculations.
Note: If you don’t mark a product variant as wholesale, the system will treat it as a standard (retail) item—even if your seller account has wholesale enabled.
Invoices and financial documents
When both your account and the product variant are wholesale-enabled:
- Your customer’s tax invoice and remittance documents will include wholesale pricing and appropriate tax formatting
- If these settings are incomplete, standard (retail) documents will be generated instead
Check with your operator if you're unsure which financial documents are generated for your orders.
Exported reports
If your account has been configured for reporting-only access to wholesale features:
- Wholesale fields will appear in order exports and financial reports
- These fields help with internal reporting, even if wholesale documents are not being generated
Wholesale order rules
Marketplacer does not allow a single order to contain a mix of wholesale and retail items from the same seller. If this happens, the order will not go through.
However, it’s fine for a customer to place a wholesale order from your store and a retail order from a different seller in the same checkout. Each seller generates their own invoice.
How tax is calculated for wholesale orders
Wholesale orders follow the same tax logic as retail transactions. Depending on how your marketplace is configured, tax may be calculated based on:
- The buyer's country or region
- The product category
- Specific advert or variant-level settings
- Whether your seller profile is marked as registered for tax
To ensure your tax values are correct on invoices and remittance documents, confirm the following:
- Your tax registration setting is accurate
- Variants marked as wholesale use the correct price format (ex. tax)
- Any applicable overrides (e.g., category tax rules) are understood
If you're unsure about your tax setup, contact your operator for guidance.
