You can enable the return workflow sync from Marketplacer to Shopify using MConnect. This feature allows refund requests created in Marketplacer to sync automatically to your Shopify admin, so sellers can process returns and issue refunds directly in Shopify.
Return sync supports one workflow for returns after dispatch. The operator approves the return in Marketplacer, the seller processes it in Shopify, and the operator then refunds the refund request in Marketplacer. For details, see Supported return workflow.
Note: This feature is currently available only for limited number of operators.
Before you enable return sync
This feature is only available if:
- Advanced refunds are enabled.
- Refund requests do not use the PENDING_APPROVAL status.
- Refund requests do not include more than one status type in the same request (for example, AWAITING_RETURN and REFUND_ACCEPTED).
Your Shopify custom app must also include the following Admin API scopes:
- read_merchant_managed_fulfillment_orders
- read_third_party_fulfillment_orders
- read_locations
- read_returns
- write_returns
If any of these scopes are missing, account setup in MConnect will fail when you verify access scopes. For help updating these settings, see the article How to update your Shopify permissions.
Enable return workflow sync in MConnect
- Sign in to the Seller portal.
- Go to Extensions > MConnect.
- Navigate to Settings.
- Under Orders, find the setting Sync returns workflow from [Marketplace name] to Shopify and turn it on.
Once enabled:
- Refund requests for orders processed via MConnect sync from Marketplacer to Shopify.
- Refund requests appear in the Refunds section in MConnect and show a sync status across Marketplacer, MConnect, and Shopify.
- When a seller processes a return in Shopify, MConnect syncs the status of each return line item (accepted or denied) back to Marketplacer.
Supported return workflow
The seller processes the return in Shopify. The operator refunds the refund request in Marketplacer only after MConnect syncs the line item statuses back.
The workflow runs in this direction: Marketplacer > MConnect > Shopify > MConnect > Marketplacer.
- In Marketplacer, the operator raises a refund request.
- The operator approves the return. Each line item moves to AWAITING_RETURN.
- MConnect opens a return in Shopify.
- The seller receives the returned goods.
- In Shopify, the seller processes the return and issues the refund.
- MConnect reads the refunded quantity and accepts or denies each line item in Marketplacer. For how Shopify actions map to Marketplacer statuses, see Processing returns per line item in Shopify.
- In the Operator Portal, the operator refunds the refund request.
Note: The seller processes the return only in Shopify, not in the Seller Portal. The operator refunds the refund request only after every line item is accepted or denied. If a return is handled any other way, contact Marketplacer Support, as manual intervention may be required.
Processing returns per line item in Shopify
In Shopify, sellers can select the quantity to process per line item. The table below shows how Shopify actions sync to Marketplacer return statuses:

Notes:
- Sellers can process refunds multiple times for the same return in Shopify.
- Once all quantities for a return are processed, Shopify automatically closes the return.
- If no quantities are processed, sellers can cancel the return in Shopify. This will sync all line items as Denied in Marketplacer.
- Do not use Reopen return, as this action is not supported in the Marketplacer workflow.
