Set a marketplace default shipping profile so that product variants without a shipping profile of their own still show delivery options at checkout. You can also set a default shipping profile for an individual seller, which overrides the marketplace default for that seller's products.
Default shipping profiles don't apply until you turn them on, and you can turn them off at any time without losing any settings.
Shipping profile precedence
When default shipping profiles are turned on, each variant uses the first of these that exists:
- The shipping profile saved on the variant
- The seller default shipping profile
- The marketplace default shipping profile
A shipping profile saved on a variant always takes priority over any default. For more on how defaults behave, see About default shipping profiles.
Before you begin
- To set or clear the marketplace default, your role needs the Manage shipping setup permission.
- To set or clear a seller's default, your role needs the Create and manage sellers permission.
- Choose a profile that your shipping rules reference, or it won't produce delivery options at checkout. Sellers who use their own shipping rules need a rule of their own that references the profile.
Workflow overview
- Turn on default shipping profiles and choose the marketplace default.
- (Optional) Set or clear a seller's default shipping profile.
- (Optional) Change the marketplace default.
- (Optional) Turn off default shipping profiles.
Turn on default shipping profiles and choose the marketplace default
- In the Operator Portal, go to CONFIGURATION > Shipping Settings > Shipping Profiles.
- Select the Assign a marketplace-wide default shipping profile checkbox. A radio button displays next to each shipping profile.
- Select the radio button next to the profile you want to use as the marketplace default.
- Click Set default. The Default shipping profile confirmation modal displays:
The default shipping profile will apply to all product variants that have no shipping profile manually assigned and whose seller has no default set. Variants with one already assigned stay unchanged. Switching your default shipping profile will update every variant that inherits it. - Click Ok. The profile displays a blue Default badge, and a Change default button displays.
Every variant with no shipping profile saved, and whose seller has no default set, now uses the marketplace default.
Notes:
- If a catalog rule requires a shipping profile, turning on default shipping profiles doesn't release products the rule is holding. To release a product, save it or re-import it from a spreadsheet. This saves the default that applies onto its variants.
- Variants keep a saved profile even if the default changes. If you re-vet products when Variant shipping profile changes, saving can send them back to vetting. See About default shipping profiles.
Set or clear a seller's default shipping profile
Set a seller default when a seller's products need a different default from the rest of the marketplace. The seller default overrides the marketplace default for that seller's products.
Set a seller's default
- In the Operator Portal, go to Sellers > Manage Sellers.
- Find the seller.
- Click the edit icon. The Edit Seller Account page displays.
- Scroll to the Account Features section.
- In the Default shipping profile field, select a shipping profile.
- Click Update Account.
Clear a seller's default
- Open the seller's Edit Seller Account page.
- Scroll to the Account Features section.
- In the Default shipping profile field, select Use marketplace default [profile name].
- Click Update Account.
The seller's products then follow the marketplace default.
Note: The Default shipping profile field only displays after you turn on default shipping profiles.
Tip: If your role has the Login as retailer permission, you can also set a seller's default from their Seller Portal. See Set your own default shipping profile (seller).
Change the marketplace default
- In the Operator Portal, go to CONFIGURATION > Shipping Settings > Shipping Profiles.
- Click Change default.
- Select the radio button next to the new default shipping profile.
- Click Set default.
- In the confirmation modal, click Ok.
Note: The change applies immediately. Every variant that inherits the marketplace default uses the new profile the next time it's viewed, exported, or read over the API. Variants with a saved profile keep it, including variants on products saved since you turned on default shipping profiles.
Turn off default shipping profiles
- In the Operator Portal, go to CONFIGURATION > Shipping Settings > Shipping Profiles.
- Clear the Assign a marketplace-wide default shipping profile checkbox.
When you turn off default shipping profiles:
- The marketplace default is cleared.
- Defaults stop applying, and each variant uses only the shipping profile saved on it, including any default saved when its product was saved.
- Seller defaults are retained but not used.
If you turn default shipping profiles back on, seller defaults apply again without sellers needing to re-enter them. However, you need to choose a marketplace default again.
